John Hostetler joined Vicenti, Lloyd & Stutzman in 2003 and was promoted to Manager of Information Technology and Computer Forensics in 2010.
John has more than eight years of experience serving as a leader in our Information Technology department. In 2010, he also joined Vicenti Fraud Solutions, the fraud prevention, detection and investigation unit of Vicenti, Lloyd & Stutzman. Shortly thereafter, John underwent rigorous trainings to prepare for the highly sought-after Certified Digital Forensics Examiner (CDFE) designation, which he was awarded in June of 2011.
As a CDFE, John is qualified to assist attorneys and investigators on fraud cases by inspecting digital media in a forensically sound manner. Investigations performed in this way produce evidence that is not jeopardized, creating a legal audit trail and ensuring the discovered information will be credible in court. “I locate incriminating files without tampering the original data – whether I’m rebuilding e-mails, performing key word searches, recreating damaged or fragmented files or recovering deleted data,” Hostetler said. “I also construct a detailed timeline of activity on a computer to form a nonbiased conclusion regarding a suspect.”
John also trains organizations, including management leaders and IT staff, on the proper protocol to follow with electronic equipment that is involved in an alleged fraud. “If an employer searches the computer of an employee in question, the integrity of the data is immediately destroyed and inadmissible in court – plus, there’s key data that can only be accessed by computer forensic techniques.” Additionally, John works with organizations to develop and document formal policies on the appropriate use of electronic equipment in the workplace.
This certification builds on John’s already solid foundation of experience and credentials. John graduated summa cum laude from California State Polytechnic University Pomona, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business with emphasis in Computer Information Systems. He is Certified in Computer Hardware and Networking and is a Microsoft Certified Professional.
When John isn’t recognizing, seizing, examining and presenting digital evidence, he previously managed the Vicenti summer softball team, enjoys playing golf, bowling, surfing, snowboarding, watching movies and traveling. John is also a musician and uses his musical talent to raise money for charities by performing at benefit concerts every year.
